A Medicare Advantage Plan is a Medicare health plan provided by a private company in partnership with Medicare. It combines Part A and Part B benefits, offering an alternative to Original Medicare. Medicare Advantage Plans encompass various types, including Health Maintenance Organizations, Preferred Provider Organizations, Private Fee-for-Service Plans, Special Needs Plans, and Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans. When enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan, your Medicare services are covered through the plan itself, eliminating the need for separate payments under Original Medicare. Additionally, most Medicare Advantage Plans include prescription drug coverage.

How do Medicare Advantage Plans work?

Medicare Advantage Plans, also known as “Part C” or “MA Plans,” are provided by private companies that have received approval from Medicare. When you enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan, your Medicare coverage remains intact. Instead of relying on Original Medicare, you will receive your Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) benefits through the Medicare Advantage Plan.

Medicare Advantage Plans cover all Medicare services

Medicare health plans offer individuals with Medicare the opportunity to receive Part A and Part B benefits. These plans encompass a range of options, such as Medicare Advantage Plans, Medicare Cost Plans, Demonstration/Pilot Programs, and Programs of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE). By enrolling in these plans, beneficiaries can access comprehensive Medicare coverage.

Medicare Advantage Plans must follow Medicare’s rules

Medicare reimburses a fixed amount to companies that offer Medicare Advantage Plans for your healthcare needs on a monthly basis. These companies are required to adhere to Medicare’s regulations.

However, each Medicare Advantage Plan may impose different out-of-pocket expenses and have distinct guidelines regarding service utilization. This includes whether a specialist referral is necessary or if you are restricted to healthcare providers, facilities, or suppliers affiliated with the plan for non-emergency or non-urgent care. It’s important to note that these rules can be subject to annual changes.

Drug coverage in Medicare Advantage Plans

Typically, Medicare Advantage Plans include prescription drug coverage as part of their offerings. However, if you are enrolled in a plan that does not provide drug coverage, you have the option to enroll in a separate Medicare Prescription Drug Plan.

It’s important to note that you cannot simultaneously have prescription drug coverage through both a Medicare Advantage Plan and a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. If you join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan while being enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan with drug coverage, you will be disenrolled from your Medicare Advantage Plan and revert back to Original Medicare.

Five years ago my husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer. That in itself was such devastating news. Then we were faced with all sorts of financial worries. Dealing with cancer is hard enough. We needed to find adequate and affordable insurance other than what we had. Backus Hospital’s financial office recommended we contact Craig. We were so pleasantly surprised to meet him. Craig seems to be able to empathize and relate to this population of folks who are older. Over the five years Craig has come to our home every year to go over our present situation and coverage. Craig will never push you on any decision. His absolute superior knowledge of the many plans is incredible. He will suggest a plan that he feels will fit your needs. Obviously, your health and or situation can change from year to year. It’s that yearly visit with Craig that we look forward to every Fall. We trust Craig wholeheartedly with our insurance coverage. He is professional, personable, trustworthy and a very genuinely nice man. We feel so fortunate to have him in such a helping capacity.
