Medicare supplement (Medigap) insurance, available through private companies, is designed to assist in covering some of the healthcare costs that Original Medicare does not fully cover. These costs may include copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.
Certain Medigap policies also provide coverage for services that Original Medicare does not typically cover, such as medical care when traveling outside of the United States. If you have Original Medicare and choose to purchase a Medigap policy, Medicare will pay its portion of the Medicare-approved amount for eligible healthcare expenses, after which your Medigap policy will cover its share.
It is important to note that a Medigap policy differs from a Medicare Advantage Plan. Medicare Advantage Plans are alternative methods for receiving Medicare benefits, while a Medigap policy solely supplements your Original Medicare benefits.
Medigap policies don’t cover everything
In general, Medigap policies do not provide coverage for long-term care, vision or dental care, hearing aids, eyeglasses, or private-duty nursing services.
Insurance plans that aren’t Medigap
There are several types of insurance that are not considered Medigap plans. These include:
- Medicare Advantage Plans (like an HMO, PPO, or Private Fee-for-Service Plan)
- Medicare Prescription Drug Plans
- Medicaid
- Employer or union plans, including the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHBP)
- TRICARE
- Veterans’ benefits
- Long-term care insurance policies
- Indian Health Service, Tribal, and Urban Indian Health plans
